Despite recent concerns about the presence of blue-green algae, the upcoming Technical Race and Open Belgian Championship at Hazewinkel, scheduled for Sunday, September 1st, will proceed as planned. The water at Hazewinkel was recently tested, and all necessary permissions have been granted, confirming that it meets safety standards.

Understanding Blue-Green Algae

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, are microorganisms that thrive in freshwater environments, especially in warm and nutrient-rich conditions. While they are a natural part of the ecosystem, under certain circumstances, they can multiply rapidly, forming harmful algal blooms (HABs). These blooms can produce toxins that pose risks to both humans and animals.

Health Risks

Contact with or ingestion of water contaminated with blue-green algae can lead to health issues, including skin irritations, eye discomfort, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, current tests at Hazewinkel show that the water quality is within safe limits.

Let’s SUP!

With all safety measures in place and the water quality confirmed, the organizers have given the green light for the races to take place as scheduled. Participants can look forward to a safe and exciting competition on Sunday.
