Classifications

In 2024, the competitive landscape for the BST (Best Elite competitor) rankings introduces nuanced classifications and opportunities for a diverse group of participants. From elite athletes aiming for international glory to young enthusiasts and team competitors, classifications are structured to cater to varying levels of skill and commitment. The classifications are meticulously designed to ensure fair competition and recognize excellence across different age groups and disciplines. This guide provides an overview of the various classes, including new categories introduced this year, and details the rules and structure of each to help competitors understand where they best fit within the competitive framework.

Elite Classifications

The Elite classifications serve as the pinnacle of competition, with only the highest-caliber competitors qualifying for prestigious events like the European Championships and World Cups. Categories are as follows:

  • Kids (U14)
  • Cadets (U16): Competitors born in 2008. Cadets may choose to participate in Junior or Elite classes, with appropriate courses provided at each race.
  • Elite (Scratch): Open to top-level competitors without age restrictions.
  • Seniors: Competitors aged 28 and older, born in or before 1996.
  • Masters: Ages 35 and older, born in or before 1989.
  • Grand Masters: Ages 40 and up, born in or before 1984.
  • Kahuna: Competitors 45 years of age and older, born in or before 1979.
  • Grand Kahuna: Ages 50 and above, born in or before 1974.
  • Veterans: For those aged 60 and older, born in or before 1964.

Each age classification only counts if at least eight different male or female competitors have participated over the year; otherwise, it defaults to the previous age group.

Recreants

Introduced in 2024, the Recreants class features two divisions based on board size: inflatables up to 12.6 feet and 14 feet. This class does not include age divisions, and a suitable course will be offered at each race.

Kids

This category is tailored for boys and girls aged 14 years or younger (born in 2010 or later). An adapted course is provided, and at some events, a single class board may be available. The availability of a separate kids competition will be communicated in advance.

Teams

2024 introduces a team competition to enhance accessibility and add a communal spirit to the races. Teams can consist of 2, 3, or 4 members and must register under a specific name. Teams are required to maintain at least two permanent members throughout the season, fostering both consistency and teamwork. The format may include relays or “estafette,” with a final team ranking concluding the season.
